The pike is the largest predatory fish found in Ireland. They can reach weights of 40lb, though 20lb may be a more reasonable target. However it is the fighting abilities of this Irish pike which has made them famous; they are a serious fish that can test the tackle and the angler to the limit. Fly fishing, spinning, jerk baiting, trolling, lures and dead bait can all be employed, depending on conditions and time of year. There is no closed season for pike in Ireland but in my experience the following months provide the best expectations of sport .
APRIL
The pike should have spawning completed and can remain in quite shallow water to feed on spawning coarse fish
MAY
This is a good month and all methods can work at this time
JUNE
The early part of June can be good
JULY/AUGUST
Can be difficult months
SEPTEMBER
This is normally a good month and all methods can work
OCTOBER
This can be a very good month
NOVEMBER
This can be good until the weather turns for the worse, as has been common in recent years
