Trout Fishing on Lough Arrow

Lough Arrow is a rich, mainly spring-fed Limestone lake of more than 3000 acres. It is regarded as one the great Irish trout fishing loughs, and while the average size is close to 1.5lb, fish of 7lb or more are taken annually. The season runs from April 1st to Sept 30th, but it is the quality of its Mayfly angling for which Lough Arrow is most famous. The trout angling has changed in recent seasons and the main hatches of fly are at odds with the times traditionally associated with this Lough. The duckfly hatches are less frequent, and the Mayfly hatch can occur earlier than the traditional mid May. The trout angling season on Lough Arrow can be summaries as this:

APRIL
Early in the month wet fly fishing on an intermediate or slow sinking line is the best tactic. From mid April on suitable evenings Duck Fly hatches can occur.

MAY
During early May the Mayfly begin to hatch and continue for about two to three weeks. Early in the hatch wet fly tactics work best but after the first week a well presented dry fly is hard to beat. Dapping the natural mayfly can be excellent. During the second week during suitable conditions the female Mayfly return to the water to lay their eggs, often tempting the bigger trout to the surface, as darkness falls the Buzzer fishing can be excellent.

JUNE
Early June will see the Spent Mayfly and Buzzer taper off but Murroughs can hatch into the darkness.

JULY
During the 2nd week of July as darkness falls the Green Peter begins to hatch and bring some great trout to the surface. The rise may only last 10 minutes but can produce the seasons best trout.

AUG/SEPT
Daytime wet and dry fly tactics can work given suitable conditions .
